In 2011, Cogent’s founders were frustrated as they sought small-scale, distributed waste-to-energy solutions for opportunities emerging in the US, Canada, and the Caribbean.
Finding no readily-available solutions, they set out to fill this gap in the market themselves. Teaming up with an innovative scientist at Idaho National Lab (now Cogent’s CTO), the world-class engineering team at Creare, and forward-thinking investors, Cogent Energy Systems was founded in 2012. The company’s technology development takes place in Idaho Falls, Idaho, while business operations are headquartered in Virginia, just outside of Washington, D.C.
Since 2012, the company has been awarded a succession of grants from the U.S. Navy, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, and the Idaho National Laboratory. In partnership with these organizations and Creare, Cogent has developed and demonstrated two full-scale waste-to-energy gasifiers at its Idaho Falls facility, with a complete end-to-end commercial demonstration system scheduled to come online by Q3 2018.
